TV wine expert Olly Smith on what to drink with your Christmas dishes

There are only a few weeks until Christmas and most of us are now counting down to that big festive shop. And there are so many decisions to make as you wheel the trolley down the aisles. Do you stick with traditional turkey or try something different like goose or ham? Will it be bubble and squeak on Boxing Day? And don’t forget the obligatory bag of satsumas!

But once you’ve got the food sorted, you’ve still got top up the trolley with your festive tipples. And that can be even more daunting given the range of foods we tend to serve over the festive period. Do you go for sherry or a Christmas punch for a pre-lunch drinks party? What wine goes best with turkey – or with the leftovers the next day?

And as Christmas Pudding is often served with Brandy Butter, what do you serve with it? A fruity red, a sweet dessert wine or a rich, ruby port?
